Drug-related violence in cities south of the United States-Mexico border has caused the U.S. State Department to issue a travel warning for Mexico — but did you know most of Mexico is as safe as ever? Our government is actually advising against visiting very specific places where drug cartels are warring over the billions of dollars made yearly trading illegal substances into the United States, and the efforts by the Mexican government to put an end to the drug traffic. Unfortunately, after hearing “warning” and “Mexico,” many Americans perceive the advisory for the country as a whole, which it definitely is not.

There are, of course, caveats about travel in Mexico, just as there are for visits to any foreign city or resort area, but many of these fall under the realm of common sense: Don’t stray from the well-known tourist areas, stay alert and don’t drink too much, avoid walking alone at night, only take public transportation or drive on the highways during daylight, don’t deck yourself out in expensive jewelry and avoid large crowds and demonstrations.

San Carlos sits on the Gulf of California, also known as the Sea of Cortez. The town is notable for the exceptional clarity and warmth of the ocean water in its shallow bays. With the great diversity of marine life, San Carlos is the best place in the State of Sonora for sport fishing and diving. There is a very large and active diving community in San Carlos.

With approximately 7,000 inhabitants, there is a large winter community of Americans and Canadians living in the local resorts and RV parks.

San Carlos has been the stage for Hollywood productions. The beach in front of Marina Real is known as Catch 22 Beach for the film that was made there. The film, The Mask of Zorro was also produced in San Carlos.

San Carlos is a 4 hour drive from Tucson, Arizona, along Mexican interstate Highway 15. Foreigners must obtain a tourist visa, but they are no longer required to get a car permit if they are traveling by private automobile. This is only required if they travel south of Guaymas. The area where these car permits are obtained is referred to as “El 21″ as it is 21 kilometers from the border or at the border itself.

Guaymas is seven miles southwest of San Carlos.

Guaymas is a coastal city of 150,000 that is the birthplace of three Mexican presidents. It is roughly a five hour drive from Tucson and seven hour drive from Phoenix.

Guaymas is port on the Gulf of California, and the outlet for Hermosillo. Situated on a scenic inlet and surrounded by desert mountains, it’s fine beaches, excellent deep-sea fishing, and transportation facilities have made it a popular tourist resort.

Guaymas hosts one of Mexico’s major Carnival celebrations, and is one of the oldest in Mexico. The annual event begins on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday and ends at the stroke midnight of the beginning of Lent.

Guaymas is a commercial center for the region, and has a substantial fishing industry. The area was explored as early as 1539, with the city established in the early 18th century by Jesuit missionaries. U.S. forces occupied Guaymas in 1846, during the Mexican War, and it was held by the French in 1865-1866.

Landmarks:
The city has two main plazas, one called 13 de Julio, which is nicknamed the “plaza de los flojos” (lazy men’s plaza) for the large number of people who relax there. In the 13 de Julio Plaza there is a monument commemorating the defense of Guaymas by General José María Yáñez against a French incursion in 1854. The town’s two main churches, San Francisco, built in the 19th century and Sagrado Corazon face this plaza.

The other major plaza is the Plaza de los Tres Presidentes with statues of Plutarco Elías Calles, Adolfo de la Huerta and Abelardo L. Rodríguez all of whom are from near Guaymas. Facing this plaza is the Municipal Palace, built and a small concrete pier with the Statue of the Fisherman, on which is the lyrics of the song “La Barca de Guaymas.”
